scaled measurements of bistatic radar cross sections and landing course disturbances of the ILS (only in german) PhD-thesis, ISBN 978-3-86955-570-6
summary: In an airport environment reflections at large aircraft like the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747 can lead to relevant landing course disturbances of the instrument landing system (ILS). This PhD-thesis presents a novel and unique measurement method with scaled aircraft models that allows assessing and changing the layout of ILS-protection areas with respect to safety and capacity of an airport. These protection areas are the only measure to prevent undesired reflections, thus possible landing course disturbances. Especially the introduction of the largest passenger aircraft A380 led to a discussion about re-sizing existing ILS-protection areas. |

The size of ILS-protection areas is crucial for the runway capacity, thus the airport thru-put. An essential part of the scaled measurement setup is the scaled design of real instrument landing systems in a flexible and reconfigurable way, the functionality of which has been validated by measurements. A plurality of measurements demonstrates, that ILS landing course disturbances by large aircraft can be measured in a scaled airport environment with nearly unlimited availability, as a subsitute for demanding, cost-intensive and unflexible measurements at real airports. Additionally, the applicability of a bistatic radar cross section in the context of landing course disturbances is also discussed for mm-wave and even Terahertz measurement setups validated with reference objects. Such a more generalized description via RCS offers additional possibilities of scaled measurement techniques. |
